Dates and Times:

Tuesday, April 27, 2010 from 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM (PT) in Seattle, WA

Thursday, April 29, 2010 from 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM (PT) in Portland, OR

Formation Meetings help define:

1. Why should there be an LCI Chapter in this region?

2. What are appropriate goals and objectives for the LCI Chapter?

3. What LCI Chapter activities and events are needed to achieve these goals and objectives?

4. What are the metrics to determine whether an LCI Chapter has met its goals and objectives?

Abstract:

Previous LCI Cascadia meetings began addressing these questions, and these April 2010 meetings will use the A3 Process and Phase Planning to respond to these questions in detail to help guide LCI Cascadia. The first meeting in Seattle will take the first shot at outlining LCI Cascadia’s plan for 2010, and the second meeting in Portland will review and refine the plan.

Overview:

Many people new to the lean community hear about the A3 Process and Phase Planning, and they often wonder how to use these tools. Come to remove the mystery and learn about the possibilities of these powerful lean tools. Using a one-page A3 Report to document a thinking process can be described as old wine in new bottles. Phase Planning is a primary component of the Last Planner® System promoted by the Lean Construction Institute. Here is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience, develop a stronger appreciation of these lean tools, put them to use to help shape the future of the lean community in the Pacific Northwest, and have some fun doing so!

Experienced facilitators from Lean Project Consulting will lead the sessions and demonstrate the simplicity and power of these key tools.

Meeting Agenda:

1. Introductions

2. Review the agenda

3. LCI Cascadia Chapter planning session

LCI Cascadia Community of Practice

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.

The Cascadia Community of Practice (CoP) of LCI serves the BC, WA, and OR region, providing local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors, and suppliers.  We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a local user group to learn, share, and develop a lean community. As a regional forum for conversations among practitioners, the CoP will help create a new common sense for the AEC industry as LCI continues to build knowledge in design and construction.
